Application of lactic acid bacteria in green biorefineries Organic Eprints
Lübeck, Mette; Lübeck, Peter Stephensen.
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have extensive industrial applications as producers of lactic acid, as probiotics, as biocontrol agents and as biopreservatives. LAB play a large role in food fermentation and in silage processes, where crops such as grass, legumes, cereals or corn are fermented into high-moisture feed that is storable and can be used to feed cattle, sheep or other ruminants. LAB also have great applications within green biorefineries, with simultaneous production of protein-rich feed for monogastric animals, silage or feed pellets for ruminants and production of lactic acid or specific amino acids. In green biorefineries, fresh or ensiled wet biomass is mechanically fractionated into green juice and solid residues (press cake), where the plant...

Application of the first canonical variable in the evaluation of animal production trials R. Bras. Zootec.
Detmann,Edenio; Cecon,Paulo Roberto; Andreotti,Marcelo de Oliveira; Resende,Flávio Dutra de; Sousa,Daniel de Paula; Ponciano,Niraldo José; Campos,José Maurício de Souza; Souza,Paulo Marcelo de; Vittori,Andrea.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the inter treatment discrimination according to feed conversion efficiency in several animal performance experiments. The variables investigated were: feed conversion ratio (FCR = intake: production ratio), feed efficiency index (FEI = production: intake ratio) and bio-nutritional index (BNI). The BNI was constructed from the first canonical variable obtained based on the multivariate analysis of variance of the intake and animal production (weight gain or milk production) variables. The results indicated that FCR and FEI reciprocated each other at experimental plot level but did not reciprocate at animal group or treatment level. This fact implicates distortions on the descriptive levels of probability of type I...

Applied research as interplay between farm and group level: What attracts laying hens to the hen run? Organic Eprints
Zeltner, Esther; Hirt, Helen.
On farm research is well established in organic farming. The holistic approach considers the complexity of a farm and the findings will be implemented immediately. As the experiments are often performed on single farms the results are difficult to transfer to others. Controlled experiments on group level with representative samples investigate single factors and lead to reliable and well-founded results. However, they are often far away from implementation. Applied research requires interplay of on farm research and controlled experiments. A series of ethological research work should show how this interplay may take place.

ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS FOR PREDICTION OF PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PRODUCTIVE VARIABLES OF BROILERS REA
Abreu,Lucas H. P.; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Bahuti,Marcelo; Hernández-Julio,Yamid F.; Ferraz,Patrícia F. P..
ABSTRACT Due to a number of factors involving the thermal environment of a broiler cutting installation and its interaction with the physiological and productive responses of birds, artificial intelligence has been shown to be an interesting methodology to assist in the decision-making process. For this reason, the main aim of this work was to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict feed conversion (FC), water consumption (Cwater), and cloacal temperature (tclo) of broilers submitted to different air dry-bulb temperatures (24, 27, 30, and 33°C) and durations (1, 2, 3, and 4 days) of thermal stress in the second week of the production cycle. Relative humidity and wind speed were fixed at 60% and 0.2 ms−1, respectively. The experimental data...

CASTELLINI, Prof C; MUGNAI, Dr C; DAL BOSCO, dr A; PALOZZO, dr M; SCUOTA, dr S.
The aim of this trial was to study the effect of organic housing system on the behaviour, productive performance and the qualitative characteristics of eggs. The experiment was conduced directly in the field on Hy-Line laying hens from the beginning of the productive period (17 weeks of age) till the end of productive career. The animals were divided in two homogeneous groups and assigned to the following housing system: control, conventional cage (18 bird/m2) and organic 6 birds m2 in a covered straw-bedded house with access to a paddock (4 m2/bird). A standard feed with the same nutritive characteristics was given ad libitum to the chickens. For the organic, more than 80% of the ingredients (maize, wheat and whole soybean) were organically grown, as...

Assessing the implications of mycotoxins on productive efficiency of broilers and growing pigs Scientia Agricola
Kipper,Marcos; Andretta,Ines; Ribeiro,Andréa Machado Leal; Pires,Paula Gabriela da Silva; Franceschina,Carolina Schell; Cardinal,Kátia Maria; Moraes,Priscila de Oliveira; Schroeder,Bruna.
ABSTRACT: The effects of mycotoxins on the productive performance of growing pigs and broilers were evaluated using meta-analytical approach. Two databases were constructed: (1) Broilers, with information collected from 51,497 birds and published in 158 scientific papers from 1980 to 2016; and (2) Pigs, with information collected from 7,743 animals and published in 72 scientific papers from 1980 to 2015. The meta-analyses were performed independently for each specie, following three sequential analyses: graphical, correlation, and variance-covariance. Broilers and pigs challenged by mycotoxins reduced (p < 0.05) feed intake by 9 and 6 %, weight gain by 15 and 11 %, and feed efficiency by 6 and 4 % compared with non-challenged animals, respectively....

Assessment of broiler surface temperature variation when exposed to different air temperatures Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Nascimento,GR; Nääs,IA; Pereira,DF; Baracho,MS; Garcia,R.
This study was conducted to determine the effect of the air temperature variation on the mean surface temperature (MST) of 7- to 35-day-old broiler chickens using infrared thermometry to estimate MST, and to study surface temperature variation of the wings, head, legs, back and comb as affected by air temperature and broiler age. One hundred Cobb® broilers were used in the experiment. Starting on day 7, 10 birds were weekly selected at random, housed in an environmental chamber and reared under three distinct temperatures (18, 25 and 32 ºC) to record their thermal profile using an infrared thermal camera. The recorded images were processed to estimate MST by selecting the whole area of the bird within the picture and comparing it with the values obtained...

Breitsameter, Laura; Isselstein, Johannes.
In organic laying hens husbandry it is desirable that the animals cover a proportion of their daily fodder intake by foraging in the outside run, e.g. by grazing. So far, however, few studies have investigated the factors which influence herbage intake of laying hens. In the present experiment we analysed the foraging behaviour of laying hens in the outside run at different conditions of sward botanical composition and of percentage ground cover of vegetation. The animals were taken to pasture on monocultures and a mixed plot of fourteen grassland plant species for three levels of period of stay in a rotational grazing system. By means of point sampling, we recorded scratching, plant pecking and ground pecking. Our results indicate that the factor plant...

Aufzucht von Junghennen ausgewählter Hybridlinien im ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Gerlach, Florian.

Trei, Gerriet; Henning, Anna Carolin; Lott, Mirka; Hörning, Bernhard.
Aim of the study was to carry out the outdoor use of laying hens and the feed supply from pasture in a mobile housing system in the summer time. Eight groups with 50 hens were used (Lohmann Brown Plus). The hens were kept in two mobile houses and according to the EU rules for organic agriculture. In a first subsequent experiment two area sizes (2,5 vs. 4,0 m²) and in a second subsequent experiment two frequencies of moving (7 vs. 14 days) were compared. The outdoor use was recorded via direct observations of behaviour (scan and focal sampling). On average 64 % of hens were recorded in the run. Number of hens was decreasing with increasing distance from the hen houses (3 distance zones). Most frequent behaviour was foraging (45 % of hens in the run). Area...

Zeltner, Esther; Hirt, Helen.
